‘The Consciousness Field’ is an interactive art installation/ ethnographic study where ideas about what consciousness is are collected. It was first created in 2009 by Maria Rosado Lopes for The Brain Unravelled exhibition in London at the Slade School of Fine Art (UCL).

‘With ‘The Consciousness Field’ I address some of the challenges I encountered in anthropology: the absence of the study of consciousness, data collection, data analysis, and public engagement. I’ve created my own ethnographic method. ‘The Consciousness Field’ embodies Alfred Gell’s concept of ‘Art Agency’.

‘Why is Consciousness important? Will Artificial Intelligence (AI) ever solve the riddle of Consciousness?’

In 2029 ‘The Consciousness Field’ will showcase a sample of definitions of consciousness collected over its twenty year period in different languages from the various countries it travelled to, and Lopes will publish her research findings.
