‘The Consciousness Field’ is a cross-disciplinary interactive art installation/ ethnographic study of Consciousness where ideas about what Consciousness is are collected. It was first created in 2009 by Maria Rosado Lopes for 'The Brain Unravelled' exhibition in London at the Slade School of Fine Art (UCL).
‘With ‘The Consciousness Field’ I address some of the challenges I encountered in Anthropology: the absence of the study of Consciousness in its core curriculum, data analysis, and public engagement. I have designed my own ethnographic method. ‘The Consciousness Field’ embodies Alfred Gell’s ‘Art and Agency’.
‘Will AI (Artificial Intelligence) solve the riddle of Consciousness? Can Consciousness be expressed mathematically? What is the evolutionary advantage of Consciousness? Why is Consciousness important?’
In 2029 ‘The Consciousness Field’ will be exhibited showcasing a sample of all Consciousness definitions collected over its twenty year period in different languages from the various countries it travelled to, and Rosado Lopes will publish her research findings.
